It doesn’t matter what forum you go to, there always seams to be a “Firefox vs Opera” debate. OverclockersClub.com, where I have spent the last several years as a staff member is no different.

I’ve made myself known around OCC as an avid Opera user and supporter, while at the same time still supporting Firefox. I see both as good products, but for myself personally, I think that Opera is superior.

I can understand Firefox fans feeling that their product is superior. Everyone always wants to think that what they use is the best. No problem.

What kills me though, is when you have some idiot who comes out and makes a statement that contains absolutely no facts what-so-ever. For example, a member at OCC named “asus” made the following statement (link) about Opera:

“firefox has more default features…”

I would really like to know what the frak he is talking about there. Firefox has more features? o.O That’s a new one.

To get Firefox up to what Opera has feature wise, you need to download about 1.1MB of additional extensions, which will cause Firefox (in some cases) to slow down. You also have to keep these extensions updated with each new Firefox patch or version.

Even after that you still need an email client. Opera comes with M2, Firefox comes with nothing. Though there is Thunderbird, which is an excellent email application. However, that adds another 5.8MB that has to be downloaded.

We you compare the system requirements for Opera vs FF/TB, Opera requires 9.0MB of disk space. FF and TB each require 52MB or 104MB total, and if you remember there was another 1MB of extensions. So, the Mozilla applications take up more than eleven times the amount of disk space than Opera, and it still doesn’t offer the flexibility? o.O I find that amazing.

Granted, disk space isn’t exactly worth arguing over anymore. People like me have storage out the wazoo. ;) But to claim that Firefox has more default features, common, how fraking stupid do you have to be? Firefox was never meant to have more features than Opera. Firefox was built around simplicity. You get a base, and add on to it what you want.

Sometime I wish I could just ban people for being an idiot. But then, who would we laugh at? :p
