Not related to the George Lucas epic that finally concludes this week, but rather the US Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) by the same name, Star Wars.
The origional project was proposed by Ronald Regan in 1983, but never really materialized. Over the years the SDI was scaled back, renamed, and refocused. Bill Clinton almost killed the project while he was in office.
It looks like the US Air Force is going to ask President Bush for approval to begin working on a new space based missile defense system. Hey, if the USAF can build a system that will effectively shoot down any ICBM or nukes headed toward the USA, I’m all for it.
