Last night was the opening night for Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruse’s rendition of H.G. Wells’ classic “War of the Worlds”. There wasn’t a lot that could be done to the movie, since everyone knows the story. Alien’s popup, start zapping people with killer laser rays, and then fall over dead after everything we try fails.

In my opinion, Tom Cruse really didn’t add anything to the movie. War of the Worlds would have been just the same with probably anyone else in the role. He’s just a guy running for his life, while doing what he can to try and protect his two children. Along the way, he finally realizes what his children mean to him and what he’s missed being a dead beat dad.

The best part of the movie, IMO was the effects. Giant alien robot-type things, lasers that instantly obliterate and human in its path, military ground and air units unloading an arsenal of weaponry at the targets. Special effects were cool, and that’s about it.

Also wanted to mention that we went and saw the movie at the new Regal Cinema’s “Pentacle 18″ theater here in Knoxville. That place is frakking massive and very nice.
