Most of the questions I get asked about OCC all have the same answer. I don’t know.
Yes, I may be in the “Staff” user group and even called the “Senior Editor” but the truth of it is, I am really nothing more than a glorified member. The only thing that really sets me apart from “normal members” is I can ban people, manipulate post and topics, and post my own news items without approval.
Sure, once upon a time I received some gadgets and a few cool things to tinker with (and review), but if you haven’t noticed, I haven’t exactly done a review (or any other kind of article) for OCC in sometime.
Why don’t I do many reviews any more? That’s one question I can answer. For starters, life for me has changed a lot. I don’t have the money to spend on reviews, don’t have the best hardware for comparisons, don’t have the room to spread stuff out, nor do I really have the time needed to devote to a proper review.
Part of it has to do with my recent (well, over a year ago) marriage. Part of it has to do with decisions in my life causing a ton a debt. Part of it has to do with what I’d consider tech or OCC “burn out”. Sorry, a person can only review so many cases and heatsinks before it starts to get old. And part of it has to do with my highly active addiction to WoW.
I’m still highly active around OCC, but no more than some of the other members. I try and be an active, helpful, and visible staff member. Which I think I’ve accomplished well, maybe too well. Some people think I own or run OCC, I’ve never made that claim, because I don’t run it or own it. I just help out.
I’ve been getting a lot of messages lately about OCC. Most of them I don’t have a real answer for, but I’ll say what I can:
Q: What’s up with the OCC name change?
A: I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything about it in a long time. As far as I know you can still submit your suggestions or ideas.
Q: Who is going to be the new reviewer?
A: I don’t know. I’ve not heard anything about this, other than LinuXProX was looking for someone else to help out.
Q: When will the next OCC LAN Party be?
A: I don’t know. I thought this was going to be an annual thing, but as you can see it hasn’t happened that way.
Q: Can you add x feature to OCC?
A: No. I cannot add anything. If you’d like to see something, post it here and if LinuXProX likes the idea and can do it, he’ll add it.
Q: When is the next review going to be posted?
A: I don’t know. I don’t even have a clue as to what is currently being reviewed.
Q: The OCC “news page” use to have so much more, why’d you quit?
A: I use to post at work, which I really shouldn’t have been doing to begin with. Several months back they added a content filter to the network that blocks my access to the “OCC Staff Webmail” system as well as several “tech” sites. Because of this I wasn’t able to post as much or as often. By the time I get home from work, I usually don’t feel like doing much of anything much less checking and email account that gets several hundred messages a day.
Q: I submitted a news item, why wasn’t it posted?
A: I don’t know. All user submitted news goes to LinuXProX. I never see them.
Q: Where has LinuXProX been?
A: Usually the answer to this is “I don’t know” or “He’s hiding”. LinuXProX does a lot of behind the scenes work and stays hidden so he isn’t bothered. Other times, he just disappears and I don’t hear from him for a week or two.
Q: What is the next big thing for OCC?
A: I’m not sure. A while back I started work on a new and improved OCC News System, something I called “OCCNewsProX”. The system was a mix of features and ideas I had seen in other news systems, coded from scratch by me. During this time I also started on a “OCC System Database” that would combine the features of a case gallery, OC Database, and some other stuff together. I had gotten a good number of things done on each, but never finished it. I turned the work over to LinuXProX and he now has the source for both. The news system I started work on is being implemented on a new “OCC Content Management System” which should offer a lot more flexibility to the site. I don’t have any specifics though.
Q: What’s up with the OCC redirect thing?
A: No clue on that one either. I know it has caused problems for some people, but I’m not sure exactly what it does.
Q: Can we get more themes/skins for the forum?
A: I had hoped to make some, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. Feel free to request it though.
Q: Will you add a x subject forum?
A: No. I cannot add any new forums. Though you can request it.
