Google Talk Silently Updated

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

I’ve seen this posted around the net several places. It appears as though Google Talk has silently updated itself to version 1.0.0.66 Beta.

Not much is said about the update according to the changelog listed on FileForum, and good luck trying to find anything listed on Google’s site. ;)

Skype 1.4 Beta For Windows

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

A new beta version of Skype, 1.4.0.45, has been released for testing. The most important change in 1.4 is “significantly improved call quality”. In addition to that call forwarding has been added as well as the ability to further customize Skype via the Skype Store. More details on what has changed can be found in the changelog.

Please note, Skype 1.4 Beta is recommended only for advanced users and testing. If you aren’t feeling quite up to that, download the Official release, 1.3.0.66.

One Month

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Well, it’s been one month since the plant started the 4-10 shifts. I thought I’d get use to it, but so far after one month I’m still not liking it.

Personally, I feel less productive. Sure, I may be doing more work per day because of the extra two hours, but it isn’t the same amount of work I’d be getting done on a Friday.

Only two more months to go, and then we’ll see if this 4-10 shift is going to work, or fail miserably. From what I’ve been hearing, I’d say the chance of it being a total failure are pretty good, despite the positive spin every one in management tries to use.

At least tomorrow is the last day of the week, and brings on a four day holiday for me. ;)

Nope, It Wasn't Me

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

No, I don’t know what is going on at OCC right now. Despite the text in the error message, I’m going to have to assume LinuXProX is doing something to the site.

When I am able to get in, the site is under high load, but there are relatively very few people actually online.

Google Moving Into Print Advertising?

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

According to C|Net News.com it looks like Google may be moving into its first offline venture. If the rumor is true, Google could be expanding their AdWords program into printed publications.

Here is an example of what the printed ads look like in PC Magazine, and here is one from Maximum PC. Those are the only two examples I could find so far.

Like most people, I really don’t pay a lot of attention to ads in magazines, but I guess I’ll take a closer look the next few issues just to see if Google pops up in them. – Pardon the pun. ;)

Google Sitemaps Adds Mobile Sitemap

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Google has had a pretty nice feature for webmasters called, Google Sitemaps, which allows you to submit a list of links (a.k.a. a sitemap :P ) directly to Google so they know what pages exactly to crawl and index.

They have now updated sitemaps to include the ability to submit a mobile sitemap. URLs indexed from this sitemap will be accessible to users searching via Google’s Mobile Search.

GMail Changes

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Google has made a couple of small changes to GMail.

First off, current GMail user’s now have 100 invites that they can use. Need a GMail account? Feel free to contact me, and I’ll send one (or more) to you. Also, OCC has a GMail Invite Thread that you can make use of as well. — It helps if you’ve been a member there for a while. ;)

If you live in the US and have a mobile phone you can also sign up for GMail with it.

IRC Transcript From Opera's Birthday Party

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Well, since I was at work today during the party, I didn’t get to join in on the Opera IRC channel and join in the fun there. Thankfully Opera has posted the transcripts for everyone like me who missed it. ;)

Wish I could have been there. :/

Opera's Site Under Heavy Load

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Well, it looks like Opera’s site is starting to slow to a crawl. Though with it being hit hard from digg and Slashdot, it’s amazing the server hasn’t gone up in flames. :P I know, I know…. give it time and it probably will.

Even with the site bogging down like it is now, this is a good sign for Opera. It means there are a lot of people hitting the site, downloading the browser, and getting free registration codes.
