What Is Google Doing To Their Search Results?

I noticed something interesting the other day while searching for something on Google. It looks like they have modified the results so that the first result on certain searches will result in some of the more important links being displayed as well.

I know my description of what is going on doesn’t really paint a clear or easy to understand picture of what they are doing….. so it’s better that you see for yourself.

Seeing it for yourself is probably better… Take this google search for “adaware”. See that the search results include links for “Download”, “Purchase”, “Home User”, and “Ad-Aware Professional”. Searching for some other applications (Opera, WinAmp, DesktopX, XINE, Slackware, etc) returns similar results.

But it isn’t limited to just software searches…. I tried a few others like “Microsoft”, “NeoWin”, “Yahoo”, and “Comcast” which all returned “other” link results. Oddly enough, a search for “Google” did not return the “other” links.

GoogleNet In The Works??

Is Google semi-secretly working on a parallel Internet for the United States? That’s one of the thoughts on Slashdot.org today.

It’s no secret that Google has been buying (or trying to buy) dark fiber all across the US. What could they use this for? Well, the could become an Internet Service Provider, a dedicated web host, or even a VoIP carrier. Who knows. With Google, it’s possible that they could become all three.
