Fate (PC)

Over the Christmas weekend, my brother introduced me to a old game called Fate. Somehow I have managed to miss this amazing game for all of these years. Oh well, that was during my WoW time, so I’m sure I missed a lot all together. ;) According to Wikipedia, Fate was originally released in May of 2005… so, if you are like me, we’ve overlooked this game for years! Good news, you can still pick it up and for about $20.00 online.

Without giving away the plot, Fate is a lot like a simplified version of the Diablo games. You travel into a dungeon which is randomly generated. And I mean everything is randomly generated… the layout, the monsters, the loot, even what the vendors are selling. Your ultimate goal is to kill some nasty monster that resides on a random level picked out when you fist start your character. The monster I’m looking for is on level 50.

The game has some cool features, including a pet (cat or dog) that will accompany you into the depths of the dungeon. Feeding the pet fish will change your pet into various other creachers (with added bonuses) ranging from little spiders to giant griffins. The pet make a great 2nd attack, or a diversion while you try and run away. You’ll find a wide range of armor and weapons including socketed and magical items (white = teh suq; purple = good; green = better; yellow = uber). When you need to rest from the dungeon, you can also fish. Who knows what kind of treasure you’ll pull form the water.

Your character can reach up to level 99 and fame level 20 (both hard coded by the game), however the dungeon has 2,147,483,647 (magic number) total levels. The deeper you go, the better the items will be. I think you’d have to be crazy to venture that deep!

Sadly the game features no multiplayer. Given the total number of levels, I think this could have been a really cool co-op game… maybe Fate 2? So, if you’re looking for a fun, entertaining, cheap, game for your PC I’d highly recommend trying out Fate. After all, it’s $20.00 and due to it’s older system requirements, it should run on just about any computer.

There are also a number of community built modifications that can help you extend the game out even more. These mods range from new items, to new monsters, or even new towns.

The game is rated “E for Everyone 10+”.
