Earlier today Steve Jobs game his keynote address at MacWorld. There was some cool things announced, including a new MacBook called MacBook Air. While the new MacBook Air is pretty cool, there was another product that I was more interested in. The Time Capsule. This sucker is about the size of the Apple TV and is a wireless NAS system. You use it with Leopard’s Time Machine feature to create point in time backups of all your files. It’s wireless (802.11n) and comes in 500 GB and 1 TB sizes. What really amazed me though was Apple has it listed for only $299 and $499, which is reasonable compared to similar wired devices.
Remember the bit about the Time Capsule having 802.11n built in? It is it’s own access point. You can connect it up to your broadband modem and use it to share your network, or use it to extend an Apple Air-Port based network. So, you’ve got a wireless router and a NAS system all in one. Pretty dang nice.
Of course there was more that came out of MacWorld.
We had the already mentioned MacBook Air. It’s small enough to fit inside a interoffice manila envelope, has a 13.3″ wide screen display, built in wireless and blue tooth, iSight camera, full sized keyboard, multi-touch trakpad (think I phone gestures via a trackpad), 5 hour battery life, and weights in at 3 lbs. The price is a bit steep (it’s Apple, what’d you expect?) ranging from $1,799.00 to about $3,100.00. Engadget has a pretty nice video showing off the unit. Personally, I’d rather have a MacBook Pro than a MacBook Air.
Apple TV recieved an update, as well as a slight price drop. Apple TV Take 2 will allow you to rent movies directly to your TV. DVD quality and even 5.1 HD movies. In addition to the movies, you’ll also be able to view pictures from your computer or .Mac or Flikr account.
No 3G iPhone, but we did get a firmware update. 1.1.3 pretty well ads everything we have already read that it would be adding. Google Maps can now triangulate your approximate location based on cell towers and WiFi spots around you. You can create up to 9 home screens, which will be nice once more apps are available on the iPhone. In addition to new home screens, you can reorganize the icon layout. You can send SMS message to multiple people now, but still no support for sending pics. You can also bookmark websites and add them to your home screen.
iPod Touch also got some new apps, though in order to get these, it’ll cost owners $20.00. Sucks for them.
That’s pretty much my thoughts on the major thing from the keynote. Want to know more, check out Engadget or Gizmodo. They both have a good bit of info on all the new stuff from Apple.
