I just got back from seeing a 1:00 pm screening of Cloverfield, which was produced by Lost creator J.J. Abrams. By the time it ends, Cloverfield leaves you with more unanswered questions than a whole season of Lost. The movie, which runs for just under an hour and a half (feels more like an hour) was filmed entirely on a hand held camera. In fact, if you get motion sick easily, do not go see this movie. I’m surprised they didn’t have a warning at the ticket stand.
Since my little review here contains a few spoilers about the movie, I’ll continue after the jump. Cloverfield is a monster movie, but you’ll never know exactly what kind of monster it is, where it came from, or why it is attacking New York. At times, it actually looks like there may be more than one giant monster, but that’s another thing that is never confirmed. You’ll see several little monsters running around, but only get a good shot of the big guy near the end.
You spend the first 20 minutes or so getting to know the characters, but after that all hell breaks loose. From that point on it is a pretty wild ride. While there really isn’t much slow down after the monster attacks, there several humor moments offered via the camera operator. The movies is less about the monster, and more about a few people who survive the attack. This band of friends aren’t soldiers or fighters, they’re not out to kill the monster and save the city, they’re just trying to save a friend against all odds.
By the time it was over with, I felt like I had watched half a movie. I kept waiting and waiting to find out more about whatever this creature was. The information I was after never came. A military figure in the movie summed it up best, “we don’t know what it is, but it’s winning.”
I enjoyed the movie, but it won’t be for everyone. There is still so much more to know, so much unanswered. I’ll be waiting for Cloverfield II, it just has to happen. Don’t leave me hanging like this!
For those of you like me who wait for the credits to roll just to see if there is another clip with anymore information, let me tell you there is no clip. However, there is something that sounds like a person speaking on a radio with a weak signal. None of us that remained in the theater could make out what it said.
