In the current state of the economy I feel fortunate to have a job, much less two jobs. – Though technically I have three, although the wife continues to argue that the 3rd one is just a hobby.
At any rate, I’ve been able to work my ass off for a while now. Using the 2nd income to pay off property tax, bills, buy a couple of nice things, but mainly to pay down the obscene amount of debt that has been accrued over the last few years. When I started the 2nd job, which is an hour drive one way, I knew it wasn’t going to be permanent. Heck, I’m surprised that I stayed there this long.
Last weekend I was notified that I should plan on that work coming to a stop by the end of April, and that for the next several weeks I should plan on training my replacement. While I’ll miss the money, I sure wont miss the 4 hours I spent traveling each weekend or the time away form my wife. Though I expect them to call me back within a few months after I’m gone.
Apparently the guy that will be coming in to work for the company and replacing me (I was just a contractor) is working on his MBA-MIS. That’s great and all, but I think he’ll find the work that they have planed for him to suck… no really, it sucks, and I hated every minute of it…
The work was done for a medical group who uses a program called NextGen for Medical Records, Billing, and some other stuff. The program comes with a default set of templates, however users can go in and modify or create their own templates to satisfy their needs. This program for as complicated as it is, is really nothing more than a glorified Microsoft Access database. As powerful as it is, it is also one of the biggest pieces of crap that I have ever seen in my life.
Pretty much every action is trigger based, and they have a good number of “trigger types” to select from. Though depending on the type of field, or the action being preformed, you are limited to what kind of triggers you can actually do. This usually ends up resulting in a complex set of other actions, usually stored procedures in the database, to do some kind of simple task. This is only complicated more by the software being buggy as hell.
Who knows. This guy could come in and do wonders with the software that I’d never even conceived possible. I’d much rather than be the case than for me to have to come back and relearn everything I did in addition to anything that they have modified.
But alas, for now this chapter will be coming to an end.
