iPhone OS 3.0

Last week Apple gave us a “sneak peak” to the next version of the Operating System that powers the iPhone and iPod Touch. If it’s as good as it sounds like it is going to be, it could eliminate the need for most people to jailbreak their devices. I’m certainly excited.

Apple’s event only covered a few of the changes, but noted that the next version contains 100 new features while the SDK itself contains 1,000 new APIs.

First the bad news… iPod Touch owners are going to have to fork over $10 to get the update. Same raw deal they got with the 2.0 OS update.

More bad news… owners of the first generation iPhone will not get all of the features do to “hardware limitations”. I call BS on that, but whatever.

A few of the things that excited me most about the update include:

  • Landscape mail
  • MMS Support (iPhone 3G only)
  • Stereo Bluetooth via A2DP
  • Spotlight for the iPhone (I’ll never change home screens again)

While I’m not that excited about it, 3.0 will also introduce copy and past functionality. It’s been the number one item on a lot of people’s lists so it is nice to see this make it into the feature set. If nothing else, it should get everyone to shut up about it. :p
