Amazon VoD & TiVo Working Again

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Back around November or December, an update to TiVo killed the Amazon.com Video on Demand (VoD) service. That really sucked, as I loved being able to download movies and TV shows from Amazon.com to my TiVo boxes. It had been a while, so I figured surely to God they have this thing fixed now. And yesterday evening, I logged into Amazon.com and told it to send me a copy of Supernatural Season 4 Episode 1 to my living room TiVo. I’m happy to report that the service is working once again, though it is a bit slower than I remember… but then, that could very well be my network or something wrong with Comcast.

While I am thrilled that the service is working once again, I must say that I am rather disappointed that I wasn’t notified by Amazon.com or TiVo and informed that the service is working again. A simple email from Amazon, or a notice sent to my TiVo messages should have been extremely easy for them to pull off. Had they notified me, I’d have probably been downloading a lot more moves rather than using the crappy Comcast OnDemand service.

TiVo Update Killed Amazon VoD

Monday, December 1st, 2008

I’ve been using TiVo for about 5 years now, and I absolutely love it. It’s a fantastic service that has forever change the way I watch TV. It’s kind of like broadband internet, I cannot imagine going back to the way things were before.

One of the cool things I’ve enjoyed about my TiVo for the last year or so is the ability to rent movies from Amazon Video on Demand (formerly Amazon Unbox) and have the movies downloaded directly to my TiVo. Not only is it a easy to use service, but the cost of most rentals is around $3.99 a whole buck cheaper than what Comcast charges for their extremely slow OnDemand service. And just to throw it in there, renting movies from Apple via iTunes is about the same cost as TiVo-Amazon. ;)

That Amazon-TiVo service worked great until a few days ago when TiVo issues the Fall 2008 Update. The new update changes some of the menus, adds the ability to order pizza from Domino’s, download video on demand from other providers, and unintentionally bricks the Amazon VoD service.

It took me three days of contacting Amazon (email and phone) before I finally got someone on Sunday that actually identified the problem as the TiVo update. Right now when you rent a video, it’ll start to download, and then just vanish. If you check for an error, you get the extremely vague “an error occurred while downloading the video.”

Yesterday morning when I spoke to a rep, they were estimating it’d be ~20 hours before the service was restored. This afternoon when I spoke to someone, there was “no new information.” So Right now, all I can do is wait.

88 Minutes

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Being home from work sick, and having already watched The Clone Wars I was getting incredibly board. So I found myself browsing the Comcast OnDemand movie listings. I cam across 88 Minutes staring Al Pachino.

Aside from a tooth brush scene early on the movie, this was actually pretty dull and boring. You have Al Pachino with really bad hair running around for an hour and a half as women in his life are murdered in a way similar to killer he put away a few years before.

Don’t waste your money on this one… wait till it ends up on TV or the free movie section.

Comcast To Offer More Mail Space Than Google

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

This morning when I checked my email there was a message from Comcast stating that my email would soon be upgraded. Great, after all the only emails I get to that particular account are from Comcast. Usually they are emails about new services (speed boost), changes in the EULA or TOS, or info on new movies that have been added to Comcast OnDemand. Usually nothing that I read.

But for some reason I did read the email from Comcast this morning. Maybe because I’m still half asleep.

Anyway, the email stated that soon my account would be updated to Comcast SmartZone. Basically it’s an improved UI that puts Comcast Digital Voice, email, and contacts all in one place. Good, that’s something they should have done a long time ago.

From the looks of it, Comcast will be integrating Plaxo for the improvements to the contacts section. Upsetting many people, Comcast acquired Plaxo back in July. Plaxo is an interesting service that started out as a fantastic contact management service, and then evolved (identity crisis?) into something that more closely resembled Facebook.

Probably the nicest thing about Comcast, and maybe the only “good” thing they’ve done recently is they will be upgrading all mail accounts to 10G. So yes, they will be offering more storage than Google. Of course, Yahoo! Mail has offered unlimited storage for a few years now. Isn’t about time that everyone removed the storage cap? Space is cheap these days.

Shoot ‘Em Up

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

I don’t remember seeing any previews or ever hearing about Shoot ‘Em Up at the theaters. If it was ever on the big screen, I missed it… thankfully with the magic of Comcast OnDemand, I was able to see this movie today.

If you enjoy the fast moving, action packed, ultra unrealistic stunts, then you’ll love this. For me, it ranks up there with Crank, Snatch, The Transporter, and maybe even Equilibrium. You can bet that I’ll be adding this one to my collection. There are so many things that make this hilarious, I couldn’t even begin to describe them all, lets just say that all most all of them involve bullets.

Live Free or Die Hard

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Live Free or Die Hard (aka Die Hard 4), and was very happy to see it available on Comcast OnDemand. For the fourth installment in the series, it rocked! I didn’t think Bruce had it left in him.

The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the street jumper that they had playing the bad guy. I found him bouncing around all over the place to be a tad bit annoying, though I enjoyed his death! :p Could we have another Die Hard down the road? After watching this one, I think they could make it work. Though it does bring one question to mind, how many more bad days can John McClane have?

I was thinking about this during the movie. While I’ve never seen 24, I think it’d be cool to have a cross over Die Hard – 24 season. Have Jack and John trying to save the day. It could happen, Fox owns both.

Fantasy moment aside, I really liked Live Free or Die Hard. I think it is the best since the original.

What Have I Been Watching?

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

There’s been a lot on TV as of late, and several things I’ve found myself watching. It’s not all good, but for some reason I continue to watch it. Why not, after all once I find a show that I really like (Black Donnellys, Jericho, The War at Home) it ends up on the chopping block.

So, here is what I’ve been watching so far, and my initial thoughts of the show:

Hot Fuzz

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

The wife and I just finished watching Hot Fuzz thanks to Comcast OnDemand. This was a very entertaining movie, and I wish I had made it to the theater to see it. I about died when he jumped through the air and kicked the old lady. My side still hurts from laughing so hard.

Dexter

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

If you haven’t seen the show Dexter, you need to. It’s fraking great! I first found out about it after seeing this thread on Neowin.net. I’ve been hooked since the first episode, and finished watching the first season on Comcast OnDemand. Oddly enough, there were three episodes that Comcast was missing. Not to worry, I found a way to watch them.

Now, I’m waiting for Season 2 to pick up on Showtime next month. If you haven’t seen it, go watch it!

Movies

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Over the weekend the wife and I rented ordered a number of movies on Comcast OnDemand. I’ve really taken a liking to the service, it’s far less hassle than dealing with Blockbuster and their late fees. Speaking of Blockbuster, did you know if you return a movie late, and don’t rent another movie for a few months, you’ll get a letter from a collections agency? True story.

So, what movies did we watch?

Epic Movie – I expected the movie to suck, and it lived up to my expectations. I did enjoy some of the spoofs it was making toward Pirates of the Caribbean, X-Men, and Chronicles of Narnia.

The Fountain – I’d tell you what I thought of this one, except we stopped watching it after about 40 minutes. Does Comcast give a refund for movies that suck?

R.S.V.P. – This was on the free list (FEAR.net, I think), and was one of the better movies we watched all weekend. It’s very Hitchcockian, so if you like that kind of movie this is probably one for you… and if you need another reason, it’s got Jason Mewes in it. It’s got a couple other names in it too, but I’ll let you find them for yourself.

Turistas – This is basically a rip off of Hostel, but with a better cast and less blood. Better? Meh… it’s about the same.

There was some other movie that we watched early Sunday morning, but I had a Tequila hangover, and ended up falling asleep during the movie. I forget what the heck the name of it was, but it involved a group of friends, a graveyard, a cap near the graveyard (never a good idea), and people dying (duh!). It looked like it could have been a semi-ok movie.
