I Won A Sapphire Radeon HD 4870

Back in December I was talking about the 2008 OverclockersClub.com Christmas contest, where they gave away over 50 prizes including a fully loaded Intel Core 2 i7 gaming system that I estimated the worth around $5K. Sadly, I didn’t win the gaming rig… well, to be honest, I don’t know what I would have done with it. :D However, I did win a pretty slick video card.

Thanks to OCC I now have a brand new Sapphire (ATi) Radeon HD 4570 video card with 512 MB GDDR5. Just so you know exactly how much of an upgrade this is, the video card in my current system – yes, despite being a Mac user, I still have an old AMD64 rig – is a VisionTek X1550 256MB (DDR2) AGP. I didn’t even know video cards were using GDDR5! When did 3 & 4 come out?? Ok, so it’s been a good 5 years since I built a PC. I’ve just not had any reason to build a new rig.

Enough talk, right? I’m sure everyone wants to see the prize now… so here it is.

Now, I just have to figure out which end plugs into the motherboard, the power, and the video cards. :D

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to my wife who turns twenty-something today. I’m forbidden from revealing her actual age. :D We both have to work today, so she got to unwrap her gifts yesterday, and we’ll be going to P.F. Chang’s China Bistro tomorrow for a birthday dinner. :)

In related news, our dog Oskar turns two today.

And I’m Back (Again)

I’m back again. Upgraded my site to the latest version of WordPress. I must say, I’m really liking the changes to the dashboard! :D

I’ll play around with the other features later. Now, I just need to figure out what I want my next theme to look like… I wish I was more artistic in that regard.

This Should Be Better

Sorry about the bit of downtime earlier today. I actually moved my site over to a new set of servers in an attempt to improve performance.

When you ask people about GoDaddy.com, most people either hate them or love them. Me? Well, I’m mostly on the love the side of the house. I’ve never had any kind of major problem with them. In fact, when my site was running e107, someone exploited an issue with the services trackback functions. A support rep from GoDaddy contacted me, and we worked to resolve the issue.

I’ve been hosted on GoDaddy now for several years, and like I said, no major problems. However, for the last few months, I’ve noticed a considerable slowdown that just shouldn’t be there considering I’m running a single instance of WordPress. I upgraded PHP, MySQL, and removed plugins in an attempt to speed things up. Nothing had anything more than a marginal impact. So last night, I upgraded my hosting plan moving from GoDaddy’s Linux Shared Hosting package to their new Linux Grid Hosting (beta) package.

I’m really not sure what they mean by beta hosting, but so far it is certainly faster.

Now that the site is working, I’ll have another moment of downtime while I upgrade my WP install to v2.7. ;)
