If you configured your iPhone to check GMail using the big GMail icon, there is a little surprise for you with the latest update. Apple decided that you needed to be checking your GMail account with IMAP rather than POP3, so they’ve gone ahead and switched you. Don’t worry, IMAP really is better than POP3, just take note that messages you delete will be moved to the trash on Google’s servers. That means after 30 days they’ll be wiped.

Google Updates iPhone Interface (Again)
Google has updated their mobile apps for the iPhone again. The first time wasn’t that bad of an update, and this time is even better. The new UI has a much cleaner and crisp appearance. Additionally you can customize what tabs are displayed (up to three). By default you have GMail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, and of course the main Google page. A more button will give you access to Google Docs, Picasa Web, Blogger, Google Notebook, GOOG-411, and Google Search SMS.
Also, I don’t know if i it’s just the Google stuff or if it is related the the 1.1.3 update, but the new sites are going much, much faster for me.
GMail Chat + AOL Instant Messenger
The line between IM protocols is becoming more and more blurred. Starting today [some] GMail users now have the ability to sign into their AIM account. Looks like only one account (yes, I have a couple). If you don’t have the option yet, you should be getting it in the coming weeks. It doesn’t look like ICQ users show up (AIM can communicate with ICQ as AOL owns both).
The Google Talk desktop client doesn’t support “AIM Talk” yet but I’d suspect we’ll see that very soon.
GMail Labels Now In Color
Google has added the ability for users to color their GMail labels, adding similar functionality to what has existed in Google Calendar. The new update also makes it much easier to remove labels from your messages. Very nice update, though I wish they’d have a more “advanced” control for editing the colors.
Trillian Astra Build 63 Released
A new build for Trillian Astra was released last week. Build 63 fixes a number of issues with Jabber and Google Talk, and with this build all network plugins have been upgraded to the new IMcore system. There is also suppose to be a nice upgrade to the mail integration. GMail + IMAP? Hmmm…
This week’s build is set to include some UI enhancements, the build after that will begin work on audio/video integration. The good news is, Trillian Astra Beta shouldn’t be to far off. From the sound of the Trillian Dev Bog, I wouldn’t be surprised if beta came out around the new year.
