Google Desktop Search Enterprise Edition

Google has released an “Enterprise Edition” of their Desktop Search application.

The GDS EE allows companies to integrate the software with the GSA or Google Mini, meaning that users will now be able to search for files and folders on their computers, information on the company intranet, or Google. GDS EE also allows network administrators to manage the user’s preferences via the Microsoft Group Policy. Other than that, it doesn’t appear as if much else has changed from the non-EE version. Both are free and offer SDK and plug in support.

The Great Windows XPeriance

This has been a long time coming. To long to be honest, but it’s done now. That’s right, Microsoft Windows XP Professional has been reinstalled on my main rig. I’m actually in the process of reinstalling various applications as I type this. ;)

So, what are some of the first things I install? Well, in no particular order:

In addition to all of those, I also make it top priority to uninstall many of the default things Windows XP installs. Things like Windows Messenger, MSN Explorer, as well as the default set of games, wallpapers, and various other useless things. After those are gone, I also take a extremely close look at the Windows Services to see what I want to disable. For those of you who don’t know what you can or should disable for better performance, I’d suggest taking a look at this guide.

Google’s Desktop Search 1.0 Goes Gold

Google has taken the BETA tag off of its popular DesktopSearch. This may have been the shortest beta period for any product from Google.

The final version, released today includes support for Mozilla, Firefox, Thunderbird, and more. Google has also added plug-in support for the GDS tool to give it even more flexibility. Just glancing through the plug-ins, I noticed a plugin for Trillian Pro 2, mIRC, and OpenOffice.org.

Since I’m at work, I can’t check to see if the new version allows you to uninstall many of the default (and useless to me) searches, like MS Office or AIM. Someone want to try it out and let me know? :p
