Google showed once again that it does listen to its customers, by renaming it’s map and directions service back to Google Maps.
Back in January, Google combined Google Local and Google Maps into once service and decided to go with the name Google Local. Personally, I thought the chosen name was a bad choice, and apparently so did a lot of other people. So now, the name has been changed once more, and it now has the more appropriate (IMO) name of Google Maps.
Google has been on a role updating stuff, and yesterday they touched on Google Earth and Google Local. — I still think Google Maps was a better name than Google Local.
Anyway, according to the Google Blog they added extensive 6-inch imagery for many parts of the U.K., updated the Google Local database to match the coverage in Google Earth, and added two more zoom levels in Google Local’s Satellite mode.
Google today announced the official launch of Google Local. The service now is now out of beta (US and Canada only) and combines the power and technology of the old Google Local service and Google Maps into one service. Just visit http://local.google.com.
Google Local offers users access to relevant information such as integrated local search results and detailed driving directions, and includes features such as draggable maps, satellite imagery, keyboard shortcuts, and more. With mapping data combined with relevant local information from Google’s web index and business listings such as Yellow Page directories, Google Local is a comprehensive local search and mapping product.
Personally, I would have thought “Google Maps” would have been the better name to use.
Some new stuff coming from Google. The first thing is a few days old, but still thought I’d mention it. 
I’m surprised they made a new application to upload your movies to Google Video. I would have thought they would have added that functionality to Picasa or GDS.
