Last week Apple gave us a “sneak peak” to the next version of the Operating System that powers the iPhone and iPod Touch. If it’s as good as it sounds like it is going to be, it could eliminate the need for most people to jailbreak their devices. I’m certainly excited. (more…)

Friday, September 5th, 2008In case you missed it on Plurk or Neowin, Wednesday afternoon I bought my first Mac. Yes, you are reading that correctly… I now own a Macintosh computer. To be more specific, I now own a Mac Mini. Why a Mac Mini? Well for starters it was cheap.

Apple Rumors
Sunday, August 24th, 2008According to AppleInsider and MacRumors, Kevin Rose claims to have knowledge of some updates that Apple will be sending out over the next month or so. Among the rumors are:
- A revamp of the entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to the iPod Touch, with the iPod nano getting a significant redesign.
- iPods to get a significant price cut.
- iPhone and iPod Touch 2.1 Software. Touch to get it first.
- iTunes 8.0
Other than the list of rumors there isn’t much to go on. Though there is a picture of the rumored iPod nano redesign. It’s actually a pretty slick design, and I like it much better than the current “fatty” design of the nanos.
Additionally, iTunes 8.0 is supose to be a “significant” redesign. What exactly that means is anyones guess. Hopefully it’ll include some better filtering of the Apple App Store and better control over Audio Book syncing. Just things I’d find nice.
Check out Kevin’s video over on YouTube.
Rumor: Apple’s MacBook Touch
Thursday, July 24th, 2008So the internet has been buzzing about Apple’s planned “product transition” that was mentioned during Apple’s 3rd Quarter Earnings Report. What could it be?
With the success of the of the iPhone and iPod Touch some people think Apple’s next product might be a MacBook Touch. Basically a tablet PC/Mac that operates similar to the iPhone, though with a full version of OSX.
While that sounds really freaking cool to me, I don’t think I’d want one. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone and I’m saving up for a MacBook Pro (for work), but the idea of a tablet doesn’t really strike me as anything more than a novelty. I don’t know, maybe I’d feel different after actually seeing a real product.
To be honest, I’m hoping the ‘product transition’ is something else. Maybe we’ll see Apple enter a whole new arena. TV’s, GPS devices, home theater equipment, console gaming, or something else. The posibilities are endless.

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008Future iPod And Mac Controls To Light Up?
Thursday, January 24th, 2008According to iPodNN, a patent application that has been submitted to the US PTO suggest that the control wheels for future iPods may have touch based illumination. The article also states that the same function could be applied to touchpads on MacBooks.
While I think this would be cool to see, I’d like to see the control (specifically on an iPod) pulse (multiple colors?) to the music playing. Pressure based LCD or OLEDs? Hmm…
Information Out of MacWorld 2008
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008Earlier today Steve Jobs game his keynote address at MacWorld. There was some cool things announced, including a new MacBook called MacBook Air. While the new MacBook Air is pretty cool, there was another product that I was more interested in. The Time Capsule. This sucker is about the size of the Apple TV and is a wireless NAS system. You use it with Leopard’s Time Machine feature to create point in time backups of all your files. It’s wireless (802.11n) and comes in 500 GB and 1 TB sizes. What really amazed me though was Apple has it listed for only $299 and $499, which is reasonable compared to similar wired devices.
Remember the bit about the Time Capsule having 802.11n built in? It is it’s own access point. You can connect it up to your broadband modem and use it to share your network, or use it to extend an Apple Air-Port based network. So, you’ve got a wireless router and a NAS system all in one. Pretty dang nice.
Of course there was more that came out of MacWorld. (more…)
Internet Radio On The iPhone?
Monday, January 7th, 2008Apparently a new service was announced at CES today called FlyTunes. The service will be released on January 21, 2008 and will bring internet radio the the iPhone and iPod Touch. I wonder how well internet radio will work over AT&T’s edge network.
The service will be free, but ad-supported. And apparently you’ll have to download the app from FlyTunes.fm. Hmm. Hacked iPhones then? Or will the next update allow 3rd party apps?

iPhone & iPod Touch 1.1.2 Update Released
Tuesday, November 13th, 2007Apple has released a software update for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This update is mainly to fix an issue where “viewing a maliciously crafted TIFF image may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution”. Of course, many of you probably know what that really means.
According to TUAW this version also adds back the ability to use custom ring tones. Though they do question this “feature” and say it may be a possible mistake on Apple’s part. I hope not, the ability to use our own [legit of course] music/mp3’s as a ring tone would be nice.
iPhone & iPod Touch SDK Coming February 2008
Wednesday, October 17th, 2007Hopefully the announcement from Steve Jobs today will shut some people up. By February 2008, Apple plans to have an SDK available for developers that will allow them to create REAL applications to run on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
No idea how long it’ll actually take the developers to turn around and release an iPhone app, even in beta mode. I’m guessing it’ll be at least three months after the SDK is released.
