Yes, I’m Still Using The Mac

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

I’m still a noob when it comes to things related to OSX, but I’m still going at it. Matter of fact, when I’m at home I hardly touch my PC. The only time I do that is once a week when I need to run Quicken. I must say, there is one incredibly annoying thing that I’ve found about using the Mac… Me.

I get so use to using the Mac, especially the keyboard shortcuts that I try using them when I’m on a PC. This happens when I first load up Quicken, and in the mornings when I get to work. I have to remember to “switch” myself back to the Windows world.

Aside from that, I’m loving it. :) I really wish I had the $$$ to buy a iMac or a MacBook, but for now my little Mac Mini (which I upgraded) is doing everything I need it to do. – Speaking of the upgrade, I’d been meaning to post pictures of that process, but I’ve been a little more than busy lately. I’ll get that done when I can.

Rumor: Apple’s MacBook Touch

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

So the internet has been buzzing about Apple’s planned “product transition” that was mentioned during Apple’s 3rd Quarter Earnings Report. What could it be?

With the success of the of the iPhone and iPod Touch some people think Apple’s next product might be a MacBook Touch. Basically a tablet PC/Mac that operates similar to the iPhone, though with a full version of OSX.

While that sounds really freaking cool to me, I don’t think I’d want one. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone and I’m saving up for a MacBook Pro (for work), but the idea of a tablet doesn’t really strike me as anything more than a novelty. I don’t know, maybe I’d feel different after actually seeing a real product.

To be honest, I’m hoping the ‘product transition’ is something else. Maybe we’ll see Apple enter a whole new arena. TV’s, GPS devices, home theater equipment, console gaming, or something else. The posibilities are endless.

Future iPod And Mac Controls To Light Up?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

According to iPodNN, a patent application that has been submitted to the US PTO suggest that the control wheels for future iPods may have touch based illumination. The article also states that the same function could be applied to touchpads on MacBooks.

While I think this would be cool to see, I’d like to see the control (specifically on an iPod) pulse (multiple colors?) to the music playing. Pressure based LCD or OLEDs? Hmm…

Information Out of MacWorld 2008

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Earlier today Steve Jobs game his keynote address at MacWorld. There was some cool things announced, including a new MacBook called MacBook Air. While the new MacBook Air is pretty cool, there was another product that I was more interested in. The Time Capsule. This sucker is about the size of the Apple TV and is a wireless NAS system. You use it with Leopard’s Time Machine feature to create point in time backups of all your files. It’s wireless (802.11n) and comes in 500 GB and 1 TB sizes. What really amazed me though was Apple has it listed for only $299 and $499, which is reasonable compared to similar wired devices.

Remember the bit about the Time Capsule having 802.11n built in? It is it’s own access point. You can connect it up to your broadband modem and use it to share your network, or use it to extend an Apple Air-Port based network. So, you’ve got a wireless router and a NAS system all in one. Pretty dang nice.

Of course there was more that came out of MacWorld. (more…)
