Google has opened the doors to Google Checkout, their payment processing solution. It’s not a PayPal killer… yet. Could it be? Sure.

Google has confirmed to C|Net News that they are indeed working on a online payment system, but says that it is not a direct rival to PayPal.
According to this article, Google’s payment system is going to me more of an “evolution” to their current systems used by the advertising side of Google.
Sure… that is where it is going to start, but I wonder where it will end.
There are a number of news articles stating that shares of eBay.com fell 61 cents yesterday as rumors of a possible new Google service hit the air. If a simple rumor could have this kind of impact, what would happen if Google really did launch a PayPal rival service? Or better yet two new services to rival both PayPal and eBay.
Two new services? Yes, that’s currently the rumor. Google Listings and Google Wallet are the most popular names floating about. - Though, doesn’t Microsoft have a “wallet” service?
But Google would have to do more than just launch a new service. Google wouldn’t have any room for error, and they’d have to star out running and never slow down. eBay is the leader in its game, and has a huge head start. If Google were to slip up just once, it might end up where eBay’s escrow went.
Speaking of escrow, does anyone remember that? It’s the service eBay tried to use to compete with PayPal. When it failed, eBay decided to buy out PayPal and use it instead.
Anyway… with Google’s high popularity, would it immediately see a huge influx of customers just because of the name? I’d say that’s highly possible as well.
Google Wallet and Google Listings: Coming Soon? We’ll see….
PayPal use to be the buz word on the internet, then eBay picked it up and you don’t hear much about it any more. Its a shame too, I really liked PayPal.
Looks like you might start hearing PayPal in the news again. It is about to get a rival, from Google. According to a C|Net news article, Google plans to launch a PayPal rival service.
This could be very cool.
